Yesterday some members of the Aristotle Prep team had the pleasure of attending the GMAT Test Prep Summit conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) at New Delhi, India. This is the first such summit for this year and the fact that the GMAC has started off with India shows how seriously it is taking the Indian market for the exam. There were several interesting and informative nuggets of information (most of them came from Dr Larry Rudner, but of course) that we will be discussing on our blog over the next few days.
To start with, here are some key takeaways for you from this summit:

1. “The IR section will become increasingly important in the coming admission cycle so ask your students to not take it lightly” – Dr Larry Rudner

2. “The OG does not contain the best questions. Remember that these are questions that have been ‘retired’ from the test. Do not over analyse the OG” – Dr Larry Rudner
Dr. Rudner’s comment is extremely crucial in light of the fact that most students and experts alike regard the OG as the be all and end all of GMAT preparation. We had a long discussion with Dr Rudner offline as well and we’ll post more of his views and our conclusions on how to use the OG, especially the explanations contained in the OG, in a comprehensive article in the next few days. Keep watching our blog for more.

3. Experimental questions on the actual GMAT (Dr. Rudner refers to these as ‘operational’ questions btw) do not come at the beginning or towards the end of the test. They are typically scattered in the middle. Dr Rudner refused to divulge the number of these questions students are likely to see on the GMAT.

4. Dr. Rudner has finally revealed how the penalty is calculated for leaving questions unattempted at the end of a section. We’ll cover this is in a separate article subsequently but needless to say, it is a bad idea to leave questions unattempted in the test.

5. GMATPrep version 2.2 will be launched in March 2013. It will have added functionalities such as the ability to make your own practice sets by selecting from high, medium, and low difficulty questions. It’ll also have a live timer function that will tell you, while you are taking the test, whether you are within the recommended time limit for a particular question or whether you have exceeded this limit.

6. Lastly and most importantly, the GMAC will be releasing a separate GMAT practice exam pack later this year that will contain an additional 2-3 full length CATs. This will be a paid product that students will have to purchase from the GMAT website. Over the years it has been a common complaint of students that the 2 full length tests that come as part of the GMATPrep are not enough and that they need more practice tests that use the actual GMAT algorithm. Finally the GMAC has heeded your views! This exam pack is expected to be release in the 3rd quarter of this year.
These were just some of the quick takeaways from the summit. We’ll be posting detailed articles on these and other important learnings from the summit over the next few days. Keep checking our blog for the same.

Why is the RC Grail a huge leap forward? From the Editorial Team

At the onset, we’d like to thank you for being patient with the release of the RC Grail. We had promised to launch the RC Grail on 15th November, 1 month after the release of the SC Grail 3rd ed & CR Grail, but two weeks before the launch, we decided to postpone it. Why? Here are the three reasons why we decided to take this step:

1. We knew that the RC Grail had shaped up well and was a “good” book, but when we asked ourselves whether we had created a book that is miles ahead of the competition, like the SC Grail 3rd edition is, we were not sure.

2. The book had 40 passages. We realized that those many passages would not be sufficient for a student who wants to improve in RC in a limited time frame and doesn’t have the luxury of spending months reading magazines such as The Economist, the Wall street Journal, etc. Such a student would need more passages for focused practice and after a lot of deliberation, we decided to increase the number of passages in the RC Grail by a whopping 50% to 60 passages.

3. We realized that the passages in the book needed to be categorized in increasing order of difficulty. More often than not, students practice passages in an unsystematic manner and a common refrain is “I have practiced X number of passages, yet my RC accuracy is stuck at Y%”. Practicing unsystematically doesn’t help because you are unable to track your performance across difficulty levels and take corrective steps. Thus, we decided to categorize the passages in the RC Grail into three difficulty levels-Low, Medium and High.

Like the SC Grail 3rd edition, we wanted to make the RC Grail the best book available in the market and the above three steps were necessary to achieve this. Now, after more than a month of work, we are proud to say that we have come up with a product far superior than anything else that is available in the market.

The RC Grail is a huge leap forward and if you’re facing trouble in RC, we hope that the RC Grail will be your antidote. You can read more about the RC Grail and also place your order for it here.

-The RC Grail Editorial Team

Note: The RC Grail has not released yet. The book is available for pre-order on amazon.com between 16th and 18th December and will release on 19th December in the USA. The will release in the EU on 23rd Dec and in India on 26th December, 2012.

Why does Aristotle Prep not have a product for Critical Reasoning?

We have lost count of the number of times we have been asked this question over the last couple of years.

While we had thought about releasing a CR book almost 2 years back, we were not very sure how the book would be different and superior to other CR books already available in the market. What we definitely did not want was to make a person buy yet another book for CR which was the same as the other books. It was in the first quarter of this year, sometime after the release of OG13, that we realized we had enough ideas to write a book for Critical Reasoning that would be different from the ones already available. After almost five months, we are excited (and relieved too!) to announce that the book has turned out just as we had wanted it to. You will have the opportunity to hold the CR Grail in your hands in the third week of October.

Here are a couple of features that make this book stand out from the other CR books currently available in the market:

1) Most Updated Content – Most of the content and all the practice questions in the CR Grail have been created after the launch of the OG 13. In fact our team used the OG13 as a reference point when deciding which aspects of CR to focus on in the book.

For example, there are older books in the market that cover pages discussing ‘Main point’ questions but these rarely appear on the GMAT now. In fact the OG 13 does not contain any such questions. Similarly question types such as ‘Logically complete the passage’, which are increasingly being tested on the GMAT, find no mention in the older books, whereas in the CR Grail we have dedicated an entire chapter to discussing this question type.

So the CR Grail is the closest representation you can get of the kind of questions and topics tested on GMAT CR at the moment.

2) Meaning oriented approach – A major grouse that students have against most of the Critical Reasoning books available in the market currently is that they use complicated diagrams/symbols/jargon to explain CR arguments. In one such book, an entire chapter has been devoted to just explaining what these symbols stand for.

While it is true that most CR arguments follow a basic structure, the stress always has to be on grasping the meaning of the argument. If you look at arguments very mechanically you will never be able to understand the hidden nuances that are present in difficult arguments.

So you will not find any complicated figures or symbols in the CR Grail. Rather, the CR Grail will teach you how to grasp the meaning of the argument as a whole. This approach will also work wonders for your comprehension skills, the result of which you will see when you attempt Reading Comprehension questions.

Over the next few days we will be posting more information about the CR grail including some sample questions and maybe a sample chapter.

We hope that you like the book.

Cheers,

Over the last 18 months the book has sold in more than sixty countries spanning six continents and has received rave reviews.

When we were given the responsibility to work on the 3rd edition of the SC Grail, we were given just two goals- a) to make the 3rd edition better than the 2nd edition b) to make it the best book available for Sentence Correction. Though initially we were a bit overwhelmed because we know we could achieve the first goal but to achieve the second goal was an altogether different challenge. At the same time, it was an exciting opportunity for us to test ourselves – whether we can actually deliver ? Whether we can actually make this book the best book out there ? Whether we can make a student exclaim “Wow! What a great book. This definitely is the best sentence correction book”.

We started working on the project with several brainstorming sessions and ran one customer survey. We got a lot of insights through the survey and finally after one month of planning, we came up with the following improvements that could be made to the book:

• Increase the coverage of Advanced SC concepts.

• Add Practice drills at the end of each chapter so that students could get a complete hang of the relevant concepts before attempting questions from the practice set

• Replace the current set of practice questions with a new set that was more representative of the questions appearing currently on sentence correction on the GMAT.

• Add a Quick recall chapter at the end that could provide students with an instant revision of all the important rules and concepts, saving them the effort to make notes while reading the book

• Release the book in hard copy because a lot of students said they would prefer to read from a hard copy rather than from an electronic version of the book

Over the last four months, our team worked long hours and ensured that each of the above bullet points was incorporated in the book and finally we are ready with the 3rd edition of the SC Grail, a book that will set a new benchmark in the industry.

The one thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the lucid, jargon free language that is the USP of all our books.

More than anything else, we hope that this book will help you do much better on sentence correction and will be a great asset to your preparation. If it helps you achieve your target score, we’d think that our months of hard work on this book was worth it.

We wish you all the best.

Cheers,

Data sufficiency questions on the GMAT scare a lot of candidates. The questions are complex because one has to approach even question in a systematic way without getting confused. One can improve accuracy on Data Sufficiency by practicing a good number of questions . Although the Official Guide for GMAT Review 13th edition is good for Verbal, it isn’t a good source of practice for Math as most of the questions are relatively easy and only towards the end there are difficult questions.

The GMAT Data Sufficiency Booster provides you 100 data sufficiency questions so that you’re able to fine tune your concepts. Download the sample below containing the first 10 questions of the DS Booster to see what is inside.

A lot of people definitely seem to think so. In fact several ‘experts’ have gone on record to say that if something is not supported by the OG, then it is not relevant to the GMAT. For them the ideal end to every argument regarding any new concept is that there is no instance of such a concept in the OG.

We obviously do not completely agree with this point of view and anyone who has gone through the Problem Solving questions in OG12 wouldn’t either. Anyway at the GMAT summit that we recently attended, we decided to ask Dr Larry Rudner directly whether the OG was the ideal representation of the GMAT and these were the lines he responded with:

“We are not defining the GMAT through the OG”

Larry went on to elaborate that the OG is meant to provide a flavor of what one can expect on the actual GMAT. It does NOT contain every concept that will be tested on the GMAT so it is possible for you to get questions, the likes of which may not be there in the OG. We regularly come across such instances when we speak to test-takers, especially in the areas of Reading Comprehension and Problem Solving.

In the end we reiterate what we have always said – to know about the test ask either the test owners or the test takers. ‘Expert’ opinion should always be taken at your own peril.

P.S. – Larry also stated that the OG13 will primarily contain new questions and that there will be very little overlap between it and OG 12, unlike the OGs 12 and 11 which share most of the questions
